KfW is the promotional bank of the Federal Republic of Germany, established in 1948 as a public law institution, even before the Federal Republic of Germany was founded. In the year 2006 the total financing volume of KfW Bankengruppe amounted to EUR 76.8 billion (2005: EUR 68.9 billion).

KfW Entwicklungsbank (KfW Development Bank)

 The paramount objective of German development policy is to improve the economic and social situation of the poor people in developing countries.

KfW Entwicklungsbank (KfW Development Bank) is dedicated to this goal and finances projects in developing countries by offering concessional loans and grants.

It advises its partners on all issues of project implementation and supports policy reforms.The projects supported by KfW

Entwicklungsbank improve the structures needed for the economic development of the partner countries. Financial Cooperation steps in where long-term capital is lacking, where the market is failing or is still unable to function adequately.

In order to heighten the developmental benefit for the partner countries and put the funds to more efficient use, KfW Entwicklungsbank focuses its support on four areas in which it has many years of experience and special know-how.

  • Economic infrastructure To improve the conditions for long-term economic development KfW Entwicklungsbank targets its support in the partner countries on energy supply, the expansion of transport and public transport systems, and the build-up of telecommunications networks.

  • Social infrastructure Investments in social infrastructure give the people in the partner countries access to basic social services and, in this way, improve their quality of life. KfW Entwicklungsbank finances projects aiming to improve the drinking water supply, it finances disposal facilities for sewage and solid waste, family planning programmes and HIV prevention campaigns, the expansion of schools and health care centres as well as housing measures.
